Friday Feature a Friend

C.D. Hersh

Friday Features’

Guest talks about

Old Age

by

Alicia Joseph

Wrinkles cover her thin-skinned ninety-two-pound body, compliments from her eighty-seven years of living in this, at times, tumultuous world. But she’s as easygoing as they come, mostly unbothered by external noise.

She’s a headstrong, entirely capable, and stubborn woman. I love all of those qualities about her. She minds her own business and lives the way she wants. She talks to me in her beautiful Irish accent. She was born on a farm in Ireland. She rode a horse to school with a trap in the back where kids hitched rides on the way. She misses the horses. The farm had rabbits and dogs and pigs, but she loved the horses the most.

A couple years ago, her son privately talked to her doctor to persuade the doctor to tell her she couldn’t drive anymore. One day she joined me…

Body Wisdom and Food Shopping

Today’s trip to my favorite store, Trader Joe’s, was always going to include an array of fruits, vegetables, and nuts, because my mental, emotional, physical, emotional, and spiritual bodies thrive on them.

When I saw these on the shelf, I didn’t think or hesitate to put them in the cart. I knew they were meant for me.

Now for a new approach and insight into how much my relationship with food and my bodies has changed – I wanted to find out why they were meant for me. What did my intuition know that my brain didn’t?

A quick search revealed that fresh green figs are:

High in vitamins A and C

Prebiotic

Rich in calcium, iron, and potassium

Even without knowing the science behind what I need right now, my tastebuds are excited. Fresh figs are a treat. If you haven’t tried them, see if they call you in the store.

What food got the automatic green light last time you shopped?

Which breakfast choices give you natural energy to start the day?

As you answer, check in with each body.

What does your mental body need to get going in the morning?

What does your physical body need?

How about the emotional?

The spiritual?

Observation is a big part of making food your ally. Gentle reminder: observation is not judgment. Focus on awareness. Let the insights come. Here’s an example of the difference: if you’re thinking, “I should get a juicer,” that’s most likely judgment. If you’re focusing on allowing your bodies to speak to you, a juicer could gently pop into your mind, or one of your bodies could call out for fresh juice.

It takes practice, but with practice, you will gain perspective that reshapes your world.

Peace and love,

Gina

Wednesday Special Spotlight Healthy Recipe

Wednesday Special Spotlight

Shines On

Sharon Ledwith

Who shares with us a recipe for healthy
Chipotle Chicken Wrap.

I discovered this healthy recipe from an online diet and exercise program I purchased last year and loved it! It packs a different punch to your taste buds while providing a healthier choice to add to your personal menu. Who said a burrito needed to be unhealthy? This easy recipe provides anti-inflammatory properties from apple cider vinegar, immune boosting benefits from garlic, and healthy, inflammation-cooling fats from olive oil. Instead of heading to your local fast-food Mex-Tex joint, try making your own burrito at home.

Chipotle Chicken Wrap

1 garlic clove

1 tbsp. olive oil

1 tsp. chili powder

1 tsp. apple cider vinegar

Juice from ½ lemon

Pinch of salt and pepper

½ tsp. paprika

4-6 oz. boneless, skinless chicken breast, diced

1 cup romaine lettuce or spinach, chopped

1 tbsp…

Easy Lunch, Dinner, or Snack – Food As Ally Meal Idea

www.foodasally.com

You’ve been asking for easy meal ideas that will keep you out of a hot summer kitchen. This is one of my favorites.

Fast Nachos photo by Gina Briganti

Nachos are endlessly versatile and a great way to eat cool sour cream, fresh diced tomatoes, zesty green onions, smooth velvety guacamole, ready-made cheeze (non-dary or dairy) sauce, your choice of tortilla chips, and protein.

Added bonus, it travels well.

Take it with you – Fast Nachos. Photo by
Gina Briganti.

Bring these to work or a picnic by separating ingredients in containers. Purchased guacamole singles (pictured – Trader Joe’s Avocado’s Numbers Guacamole to Go) are perfect for one meal and will stay green. The protein of choice, next to the plant-based cheeze sauce, is grilled turkey cutlets. Coconut water is a favorite hydrating drink for hot days. Salsa Verde Corn Tortilla chips from Trader Joe’s give salsa flavor.
