“Cream, come here.”

She watched Peaches closely, clearly hearing her say the words to Cream without moving her lips.

“The kitchen is…you’re talking to me?”  She stared, astonished.

“I do it all the time.  You mean all this time you haven’t been listening to me?  It’s been four years Dana.”  Peaches sat on a lounge chair by the pool, facing her.

The admonishing tone reminded Dana of her dead husband Ben.

“Oh, I’m dreaming.”  A lot of her house was missing.  The dog door that Peaches and Cream used to get to their parts of the house was where it should be.

A tennis ball tree?

Her confused mind bucked at what her eyes were seeing.  There were other differences, too, including a large dog house that wasn’t usually there.

Dana sealed and stored the leftovers and took a last swipe around the kitchen.  And now, she thought, I’m free!

She settled into her favorite reading spot in the living room with the latest J.D. Robb.  She loved Eve Dallas, Roarke, Mavis, Peabody, McNab.  Heck, she loved everything about the series.

Peaches pushed a wet tennis ball into her hand.

Chapter 2

Jenny looked over the offerings on the kitchen counter.  She was only slightly hungry but the vegetarian mushroom stroganoff her mom was working on was delicious enough to tempt her.

She took some of it out on the patio with her math homework, and the dogs, Peaches and Cream.

Jason disappeared into his room to do homework after Jeremy left.

He put his dishes on the counter and looked around for the trash for his beer bottle.  Dana held out a hand.  “I recycle those.”  She motioned to the door.  “I’ll walk you out.”

“No need, Dana.  We’ll see you next week.”

They wore matching grins as they walked out the front door

“I’ve got all my stuff, Dad.  I finished some of my math homework, too.  Thanks again for all the food, Mrs. C.  It’s really good.”

Dana appreciated his attempt to show off his manners for his dad. “You are very welcome.  Wednesday is test day.  You’re invited, both of you, for next week.”

“We’ll be here.  Thank you, Dana.  It’s been awhile since I had food this great.  I like home cooking.”
