Dana followed the noise to Jason’s bedroom.

They were playing virtual baseball and one of her least favorite screamo bands.  Loud.

“Carter, your dad is here.  He just sat down to eat so you have a few minutes before you need to go.”  She waved her hands around and yelled at the top of her lungs, pointing at Carter for emphasis.

Dana and I were trying to find some way to call this work, and then we realized we are the boss! There’s no one to look over our shoulders and ask us what we were doing sharing YouTube videos. Ha!

 

Isn’t she the cutest? We’re embarrassed to admit how many of these we’ve watched, so you’ll have to fill in your own number. Nope. No hints!

Joe was proving his bravery and chivalry by taking a small spoonful of the orange chili.

“I’d love a beer.”  He sat at the kitchen table, looking around uncertainly, just as his son had.

“We’ve all eaten.  My daughter Jenny is at work and there’s plenty left for her.  Kick back, relax.  I’ll go find Carter.”

“It’s lovely to meet you, Joe.  I’m Dana Carapelli.  The kids call me Mrs. C.”  She pushed hair off her face and held out a hand to shake.  “I’ll get Carter for you. Have you eaten? We have food if you’re hungry.”

She was excited at the idea of an adult test subject.  Maybe the lonely orange chili would have a fan before the night was over.

“I’m starving.  Normally I wouldn’t want to impose but we’re still getting settled in at our place and I don’t want another burger.”  He followed her into the kitchen.  “It smells incredible in here.”

“Just a minute.”  She peered through the peep hole at the unfamiliar man on her front porch holding a cowboy hat in his hand.  He must be the new guy’s dad.

“Hello,” she smiled, thinking unflattering things about what she must look like after a full day in the kitchen.  He, on the other hand, looked tired and smelled wonderful.

“I’m Joe.  I’m here to pick up Carter.”  Joe shifted his weight, hoping to look casual while he tried not to notice how gorgeous she was.

     A new face smiled at her uncertainly as he looked at all the options on the table.

“Yeah, Carter, eat up man.  We do this every week.”  Jeremy, Jason’s best friend since third grade told him while tasting a roasted vegetable infused rice.  “Good one, Mrs. C.”

Brittany collected her food and payment, taking a last look over everything before she took off.  “Should I come by early next Wednesday to clean the house?”

Dana nodded.  “That’s perfect for me.  Just plan to do the kitchen last.  I’ll be around the whole day, so just come over when it’s convenient for you.  Thanks, Brittany.  It’s so much easier with your help.”

“Thank you, Dana.  And thanks for telling your friend about me.  She hired me so now I have three houses.  That’s all I need to round out my expenses.”
