Dana stood in front of her kitchen window, watching Peaches and Cream play in the backyard.

The golden retrievers were litter mates that she and the twins had been given as puppies by her parents.

The day before her was full of cooking and writing. She had a deadline and she was glad that if she missed it she wouldn’t actually end up dead. She might wish she was, though.

The Dreaming

Dana knew they were only halfway through the first list. “Man,” she thought, “if I wanted to work this hard I would just wake up.”

“Wake up!” One of her sweet 16-year-olds was shaking her. “I can’t find my blue plaid jacket and I told Jim I would wear it today.”

The dregs of the dream dissolved into the familiar surroundings of her own king-sized, pillow topped mattress with the iron head and foot board she adored. She was wearing her cozy faux suede green sweats. And she was, thankfully, no longer doing kitchen duty in The Dreaming.

The list was long, and the dinner bot wasn’t back. Hmm. She decided to “think” another order onto the trays, and another, until the trays were full.
She looked at the motionless silver-haired man. “Dinner bot,” she said, in a tone that couldn’t be thought of as a question.
The dinner bot appeared in the room, sprouting arms for all the orders and disappearing down the long hallway again. She returned bearing all empty dishes and a new list.

The chicken and dumplings on another.
The dinner bot collected the items and left through the doorway, gliding down a long hallway she couldn’t see the end of once the dinner bot took the right hand turn.
She looked at the next order and “thought” it down the tubes. There it was! She was filled with confidence again. She knew she could do this.

She might as well give it a try. The first order was chicken and dumplings, Perrier, and a slice of apple pie a la mode. She stood in front of one of the tubes and visualized the order coming down and settling on the tray.

The Perrier appeared on one tray with a clear glass of ice beside it.

The apple pie a la mode appeared on another tray.

The Dreaming

Tension started to roll off her, her confidence building. She could do this! Gosh darn it!

The three of them stood there for what felt like hours. Nothing happened. She considered whether or not to ask another question. There was, after all, no guarantee that she would get an answer.

She studied the clear tubes in the walls that ended in metal trays, and the list she now held in her hand. It seemed that the food must come down the tubes. Her logical mind laughed at her. Why would any of this qualify as logical?

The Author Reads From Chapter 7 of “The Dreaming”

I have so much to celebrate! Desert Sunrise has received its first review, and I’m excited to say that it was five stars!

Also, I took the opportunity to thank Ann, one of my longtime supporters, by asking her what her favorite part of The Dreaming is so that I could read it on video for her. She told me that the visits with Dana and Lucy were her favorites, along with the sequences in the Dreaming. I chose a scene from chapter 7 where Dana and Lucy have lunch, and Dana tells Lucy about the strange dreams she has been having.

Though live readings by authors are becoming less common now, I hope to preserve part of the fun with my video reading.

Dance with me, people!  This is a day to celebrate!
