We all face times in our lives when it feels like we’re trying to walk through mud. Every step is slow and drawn out. But given time, things will come together. Like a puzzle. Sometimes one piece at a time. Sometimes a few at a time. There’s no doubt that it will come together when we let everything click into place. This reminds us when we’re trying so hard to make it happen, to let it happen instead.

Joanne has been writing all her life, but really only began to take her poetry seriously over the last few years. With encouragement from friends, she began publishing her work on a blog, where she earned enough positive response and encouragement to pursue publication.

Joanne is a teacher of English, History and Drama/Production. She is an active member and performer in her local theatre company.

P.D. was kind enough to answers ten questions for us in honor of #indieauthorday. Read on to learn more about why she writes, why she publishes independently and how to get her books into your imagination!

1. Who and/or what inspires you to write?

I am most inspired by the stories of those whose voices have been silenced or ignored. I want to write their stories. But I also like a really good adventure or plot twist and often develop a plot around a good ‘what if?’

2. Which of your characters do you like the most?

It’s like asking a mother which of her children is her favourite! I love all of them for different reasons. But I keep going back to Steven, the title character of Don’t Forget Steven. He’s a deeply hurt, deeply feeling person.

3. What surprises you most about being an indie author?

The amount I get to put my visual art skills to use as well as my creative writing skills. The amazing, generous community of indie writers that connect with each other around the world.

4. What are the advantages of being an indie author?

I like being in charge of my own deadlines, and being able to publish several books a year instead of the one or two that I would be able to publish through a publishing house.

5. How did you become an indie author?

I had heard that you could publish your own books to Kindle. I read a few books and discovered there was much, much more an independent author could do. And I knew that was what I wanted to do, to be able to control my own publishing career instead of having to rely on finding a publisher who was interested in my work.

6. Tell us about your latest release.

I just released Mito, Medical Kidnap Files #1 October 3. Books 2 and 3 are also available on preorder.

A hundred. Or two. I still have another 450+ ideas in my story clip file.

 

9. When will you release your next book?

Books #2 and #3 in the Medical Kidnap Files come out Nov 3 and Dec 3.

Then Chloe, which is book #4 in the Between the Cracks series, is out in January.

 

10. How can readers learn more about you and your books? (Include your sites and a short bio)

Joe flushed a little at what he was thinking.  Dana was a nice, neighborly sort of woman.  She didn’t need him thinking about what she looked like naked.

She preened with the awareness that he found her attractive.  She winked at him.  “Of the food.”

Joe’s tanned face widened into a big smile, his blue eyes taking on a new shine.

Dana followed the noise to Jason’s bedroom.

They were playing virtual baseball and one of her least favorite screamo bands.  Loud.

“Carter, your dad is here.  He just sat down to eat so you have a few minutes before you need to go.”  She waved her hands around and yelled at the top of her lungs, pointing at Carter for emphasis.
