The Dreaming – Installment #21

The Dreaming

A new face smiled at her uncertainly as he looked at all the options on the table.

“I’m Dana,” she smiled to welcome him.  “Jason’s mom.  Please help yourself to anything you like. You’re doing me a favor by eating it.”

“Yeah, Carter, eat up man.  We do this every week.”  Jeremy, Jason’s best friend since third grade told him while tasting a roasted vegetable infused rice.  “Good one, Mrs. C.”

“I’m glad.  I still remember eating too much spaghetti and peanut butter in college.  It doesn’t always have to be that tight.”

Brittany waved a last cheery goodbye and let herself out.

Jason and his friends arrived with their reliable appetites.  Dana watched them move down the table, loading their plates, passing up the questionable looking butternut squash chili she knew tasted great.

Brittany collected her food and payment, taking a last look over everything before she took off.  “Should I come by early next Wednesday to clean the house?”

Dana nodded.  “That’s perfect for me.  Just plan to do the kitchen last.  I’ll be around the whole day, so just come over when it’s convenient for you.  Thanks, Brittany.  It’s so much easier with your help.”

“Thank you, Dana.  And thanks for telling your friend about me.  She hired me so now I have three houses.  That’s all I need to round out my expenses.”

The Dreaming

The sleek notebook computer in front of her held her notes for the latest incarnation of “Dana Cooks.” The new cookbook was “Dana Cooks for Company” and promised to make impressing your guests easy. She was almost out of the testing phase now. The copy was written. Other unlucky people on the team were figuring out the nuts and bolts of photographing the food. She pinched herself thinking that she was now in the final stages of her 7th book and her fans were anxious to own it.

Thank goodness she had Jason and his friends to help eat the food when she was testing because if they wouldn’t eat it nobody would. Their enormous appetites appealed to her sense of economy, too, because there was rarely anything to throw away.

The hours melted by as she chopped, washed, cooked, noted, and tasted her creations, refining them to the perfection she was famous for.

The Dreaming

She thought about how odd her dream was as she told Jenny where she had hung her “missing” sweatshirt in her closet. She kept her tone neutral, knowing the day would be smoother if they didn’t start it the way she was tempted to start it.

Her mind flashed over the day ahead while she stood in the shower, deliciously warm water sluicing down her body as she lathered with her favorite vanilla scented body wash.

She could hear her son, Jason, in the other shower, getting ready for the day. They would be zooming down the street to school soon. Not together. They were vetoing ride sharing lately. Her suggestion that they should keep sharing expenses was met with the answer that since they had jobs and paid for the gas they should be able to choose if they went together or not. Who could argue with that?

The Dreaming

Dana stood in front of her kitchen window, watching Peaches and Cream play in the backyard.

The golden retrievers were litter mates that she and the twins had been given as puppies by her parents.

The day before her was full of cooking and writing. She had a deadline and she was glad that if she missed it she wouldn’t actually end up dead. She might wish she was, though.

She might as well give it a try. The first order was chicken and dumplings, Perrier, and a slice of apple pie a la mode. She stood in front of one of the tubes and visualized the order coming down and settling on the tray.

The Perrier appeared on one tray with a clear glass of ice beside it.

The apple pie a la mode appeared on another tray.

Tension started to roll off her, her confidence building. She could do this! Gosh darn it!

The three of them stood there for what felt like hours. Nothing happened. She considered whether or not to ask another question. There was, after all, no guarantee that she would get an answer.

She studied the clear tubes in the walls that ended in metal trays, and the list she now held in her hand. It seemed that the food must come down the tubes. Her logical mind laughed at her. Why would any of this qualify as logical?

Dana reached for the list, noting that it was not in English. She thought it looked like French and wished that she had paid more attention when various opportunities to learn the language had presented themselves. She looked at the list again, thinking that her extreme interest in food might help her understand the list.

Nope.

She wished the list was in English. She looked down at the list again. It was now in English.

Puzzled, but confident that everything could still work out well, a flash of insight came to her. “Can I please have more questions?”

The silver-haired man blinked at her, silently.

What she assumed was a dinner bot came through an opening bearing a tray with a three foot long list trailing from it. She stood six feet tall and looked like any waitress Dana would normally imagine. “Orders,” she said in a robotic monotone.
