He put his dishes on the counter and looked around for the trash for his beer bottle.  Dana held out a hand.  “I recycle those.”  She motioned to the door.  “I’ll walk you out.”

“No need, Dana.  We’ll see you next week.”

They wore matching grins as they walked out the front door

The Dreaming – Excerpt #34

“I’ve got all my stuff, Dad.  I finished some of my math homework, too.  Thanks again for all the food, Mrs. C.  It’s really good.”

Dana appreciated his attempt to show off his manners for his dad. “You are very welcome.  Wednesday is test day.  You’re invited, both of you, for next week.”

“We’ll be here.  Thank you, Dana.  It’s been awhile since I had food this great.  I like home cooking.”

“Poison control insists.”  Why not show him her dorky sense of humor?

Joe chuckled, rising with his plate as Carter entered the room.

Seeing them standing together was proof positive that they were father and son.  Carter was just a younger version of Joe.

Jenny turned to say hello to Joe, instantly picking up on the fact that he was cozy here in the kitchen with her mom. Way to go, Mom!

“Hi, Joe.” She eyed the plate in front of him.  “Another test subject.  Cool.”  With that Jenny went to her room to deposit her books and bags.

He looked back to Dana where she stood holding the sandals.  “I’m a test subject?”

“Mom, I got you the cutest sandals.  Look!”  Jenny held out a pair of black flip flops with silver flowers on the straps.  “They were $4.00 with my discount.”

She took the sandals, her mouth breaking into a wide smile.  “Thanks, Jenny.  These will look great with my new sun dress.”  She stepped in to hug Jenny.

“Jenny, we have a few people over.  This is Joe, Carter’s dad.  Joe, this is Jenny.”

“I think my son made an excellent choice of friends in Jason Carapelli.”  He swigged the last of his beer, watching appreciatively while Dana reached for a glass from the cupboard.  She filled it with water and handed it to him.

“I hear you two moved in a couple of weeks ago.  Are you finding everything all right?”  She glanced at the clock, then back at Joe.  “Hold that thought, hurricane Jenny is due any minute.”

On cue Jenny burst through the door connecting the garage and the kitchen, giving Joe a glimpse of a clean, organized garage.

There’s a New Indie Bookstore in Town – Introducing Pipe & Thimble

This is what Barb Lieberman of Pipe & Thimble Bookstore had to say about what I hope will become a neighborhood icon.
garden shot_EML
Pipe & Thimble Bookstore, much like its publishing company counterpart, is founded on the principles of (my parents) Richard and Peg Austin’s doll house miniature business in the late 70’s by the same name. We strive to treat all authors, artisans, and other indies with respect, fairness, and integrity. We will create a haven that returns to the original roots of storytelling with a focus of community, bringing forth those voices that are so essential, and yet so often unheard.
dream wish hope tree_ EML
What makes our store unique, beyond only carrying self-published and small press books, is that every single book faces out. All those amazing covers authors work so hard to get right are seen and appreciated… and picked up. Since our grand opening, we’ve had paying customers in the store every single day. It’s been such a thrill to see so many books leaving in the hands of appreciative readers.
Mystery, suspense, crime_ EML
We also don’t ‘end with the sale’. We offer our customers a small token (a lollipop, a lifesaver, etc.) on a card asking them to post a review on Amazon and just how to word it to help ensure it will be accepted and posted. We want to give our authors the entire experience, including gaining those all-important reviews. And we have more ideas on that front coming in the future.

Along with providing a platform for and promoting indie authors, local handmade artisans, musicians, and others within the indie circle, we will also offer a place to further their own reach within the South Bay, as well as working with local schools, charities, libraries, other local business, and the Kiwanis Club on joint events that support reading, learning, and community.

As independent authors and artisans ourselves, we know the struggles that accompany getting product in stores and in a way that benefits the author/maker. We also know the difficulty of finding locations that work with those in the indie circle for events. We strive to do both in a way that will benefit all parties involved in a reasonable way (be it financially, scheduling, etc.). We also host a myriad of events that are not necessarily book related, but should draw in different demographics of potential readers who will be exposed to the books simply by being in the store. You can check out our upcoming events on our FB page to see just what we have planned.

Recommended Books: They Serve Bagels In Heaven by Irene Weinberg

41hFzD8XHDL._SY344_BO1,204,203,200_

My rating: 5 stars.

Weinberg is a skilled author, writing about a subject that has fascinated me personally since I was a child, and professionally since my own talents smacked me in the face. In a good way. Reading her book was like sitting down for a good girlfriend chat.

The love between the couple moved me. Channeled information from Saul about his life between lives process sounded and felt accurate to me based on my experiences and on research I’ve read.

I will caution you that Weinberg will draw you in with stories about past lives, some of which were tragic. Have your tissues handy.

I was impressed by Weinberg’s advice about how to choose a true medium, and enraged when I read that one of the mediums she hired tried to control her by telling her that her husband’s soul would be in jeopardy if his widow didn’t do what they said. It doesn’t work that way. It really doesn’t.

The book ends on a positive note, and I would be happy to see another book from this lovely author.

As always, thank you for the time we spend together!
